Recently, the competition between top class stars in the Wednesday/Thursday drama is heating up. The two in question are MBC "My Princess"s Kim Tae Hee and Kim Ah Joong of SBS "Sign." How did the ratings shift from Kim Tae Hee to Kim Ah Joong?
The competition between the two dramas that started at the same time seemed to be no contest in the beginning with "My Princess" easily taking the lead but soon the score was flipped with "Sign" passing "My Princess." Of course, the reason for this is mainly the story of the drama itself but a part of it is due to the main actress of each drama.
Both "Sign" and "My Princess" attracted attention even before the first episode because of the casting of top stars."Sign" had the line up with Park Shin Yang, Kim Ah Joong, Jun Gwang Ryul, Um Ji Won, and Jung Gyuh Woon. On the other hand, "My Princess" had casted Asian sensation Song Seung Hun and Kim Tae Hee. There is no one greater than these as stars of a drama.
The polls of every drama analyst expected "Sign" to be more successful than "My Princess." This is because of the fact that Park Shin Yang's never failing viewer ratings, as well as Kim Ah Joong's appearance after striking it home with "200 Pounds Beauty."
Compared to them, Song Seung Hun and Kim Tae Hee lacked a powerful work even though they were famous all around. Both of them only had decent amount of movie views and had returned to the drama scene. On top of that, their acting abilities were being questioned.
But contrary to everyone's expectations, "My Princess" started to excel is ratings. Kim Tae Hee's cute acting became the main topic of the talks and the fact that Song Seung Hun fit his character perfectly created a synergy effect. The story of Korea's Royal Princess and a knight in shining armor was enough to catch the attentin of young viewers. What rescued Korea's first ever forensic science drama "Sign" from being knocked out of competition was Kim Ah Joong's "hobo cut" and "cute picture 3 set."
She was able to add that fine line of balance between the easily provoked Park Shin Yang and Jung Gwang Ryul to make a soft and smooth mood. The flow of "Sign" which seemed to be clogged at every corner, smoothed itself out since the third episode where Kim Ah Joong started to get more air time.
Kim Tae Hee's contribution to "My Princess" was surprising as well. The fact that her acting was upgraded was the reason why "My Princess" led "Sign" in the beginning. The character of a princess that doesn't look or feel like a princess fit her perfectly and Song Seung Hun's help was big.
But Kim Tae Hee's acting hasn't changed throughout the duration of "My Princess" and it's raising problems. The effects of acting cute, acting pretty, and acting wrecked are starting to wear out. It's unfortunate that she isn't giving much difference in acting unlike "Sign"s Kim Ah Joongs.
"Sign" is most likely to use Kim Ah Joong to greater effect. This is so that they don't leave Kim Tae Hee unchecked. It looks like "My Princess" will have a hard time coming back if Park Shin Yang and Kim Ah Joong starts up a romance in "Sign."
